About Me

I am a professional writer and editor.

A cross-platform storyteller, whether that means a printed feature, web article, podcast, 140-character Tweet, sculpted topiary or interpretive dance. Whatever the framework, I publish well-reported pieces with passion and humor, in that order. I’m a Portland, Ore. native with pit-stops in Chicago and Cincinnati, and now live in Boston.

I am the editor-in-chief of Writer’s Digest, a national magazine for professional and aspirational writers that has celebrated the “Writing Life” since 1920. While at WD, I’ve interviewed such notable authors as George Saunders, Andy Weir, Scott Turow, Rainbow Rowell and Heather Graham.

Before WD, I was the online editor of Family Tree Magazine. I am a regular contributor to Conde Nast Traveler, and my articles have been published by The Atlantic, New York, Outside, DRAFT, Salon, MentalFloss, Atlas ObscuraPasteVICE, Playboy and more.

In Fall 2011 I earned my Master’s Degree from the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University. In 2010 I graduated magna cum laude from the University of Portland with a BA in English.

In addition to all things magazine, I enjoy dystopian fiction, biting satire and Russian imperial stouts.
